I was privileged and delighted (a word I use advisedly) to have earned my MPA during the Lerner Years. His humor and clear fascination with his field lifted the spirits of many mid-careerists, often flagging after a day in the Real World. Years later, when a question came up professionally, I didn't hesitate to e-mail him, and he answered immediately, with the same interest and enthusiasm.

Dr. Lerner will be missed for his insight, leadership, and humor. I worked with him in 1995-96 during his service as the founding Interim Dean of the then newly-established College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Prof. Lerner played a critical role in bringing the many research and academic units of CUPPA together, and behind the scenes he was a great stabilizing influence.
