Altmay "Mae" Kabat

1935 - 2015

Altmay Kabat, Mae, the name she preferred to be called, went to grace the heavens May 31, 2015, while residing at Life Care of Citrus County in Lecanto, Florida.
The eldest of nine children, she was born March 21, 1935, in Logan, West Virginia. Preceding her in death are her parents, Earsel and Della Spence; Bertha Jules (sister); Pauline Staggers (sister); and David Spence (brother).
Those left to cherish her memory is her dedicated and loving husband of 59 years, Andrew; their one and only child, Loretta (Kabat) Van Schoyck; much loved son-in-law, Howard Van Schoyck; and siblings, Wanda Pavich (Illinois), Billy Ray Spence, Tracey Spence (West Virginia), Teddy Spence (Ohio), and Roger Spence (Florida).
The words to the song "Coal Miner's Daughter" was Mae's life set to music. Her father worked in the coal mine while her mother raised the nine children. Her strength and hard work ethic combined with her dedication to her family is what made her. That stern exterior came with a soft and sweet interior. Her smile would fill the room thus giving her the nickname "Sunshine". To quote the song "to complain, there was no need", she never did even at the end after years of illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation be made in her memory to: Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast (www.hospiceofcitrus.org). Inurnment will take place at Florida National Cemetery.
