Alton Linwood Rice

It is hard for me to put into words how I feel about Alton. And it is even harder for me to try and put into words how my boyfriend feels. The first time I met Alton he made a lasting impression on me. Because he reached out to me and accepted me as part of the family. I remember Alton as the smiling young man at Round 1 when it was on Emerson St. He had a spark for life and a big heart. I recall one of his amateur fights where he was knocked down in the first round- got up and won the fight. I saw him the next week and told him it was the mark of a champion. He just flashed that wonderful grin. My heart goes out to his family.

I have so many thoughts running through my head about Alton Rice. Alton always used to tell me when I first came to the D.C. area, "Throw that sneaky right hand." That was when no one would talk to me. I know it was hard Alton, and I know you dealt with a lot. How could you always keep a smile and a joke with the many major life losses you incurred? The University of Maryland Boxing Club will miss the mitt work Alton used to give us. I had a great time working with him for a day as an extra on the set of HBO's The Wire. He had some great boxing stories, including a trip to London as an amateur, and his two Olympic Trials experiences. He was fun to be around in and out of the ring. His family is in our prayers.

My sincerest condolences in this difficult time. I knew Alton from Round 1. He was always quick with a joke and helped everyone around the gym. My prayers are with you.
