Not sure what to say?

Al became excited about mucoid phage resistant mutants I had isolated and this initiated his work on colanic acid production and other aspects of bacteria and bacterial genetics. He was a true friend and helped our gtoup several times in years after I left Chicago. Sincerely, Roy Curtiss

A wonderful person & he will be missed. May he rest in peace.

Alvin ("Big Al") was my teacher and mentor as I got my Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. He had an immense impact on me as a person and as a scientist. He will be remembered as a great mentor and a wonderful friend. Our friendship continued far beyond the few years working with him in the lab, and he will be missed from now on. The good memories will continue.

I have known Alvin for over 77 years. His influence on my life greatly contributed upon the fortunate man I am today. He was the best man at our wedding. We went on Alvin and June's honeymoon, when they were on their way to Seattle. We played all of the sports growing up. Whereas I could always beat him in a foot race, I could never come close to beating him on our bikes. His loss leaves a hole in my life. His encouragement to all of my ventures always helped my decisions. What a great friend.
