Mr. Andrew William Campbell, Jr., was born on July 15, 1932 in Pageton, West Virginia, to the late Andrew William Campbell Sr. and Willie Mae Dunn Campbell. In 1943, the family relocated to Bluefield, WV, where he attended Mercer County Public Schools.
Andrew graduated from Genoa Senior High School and then enlisted in the United States Army in 1949. Upon returning home in August 1958, he married Imogene Miller and to this union four children were born. He served his country throughout various assignments around the world, fought during the Cold War Era Korean Conflict (War) and Vietnam War, and was recognized and highly praised for his many accomplishments. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1974 at Fort Lee Army Base, Va., after dedicating 25 years of honorable and faithful service to our nation.
Andrew’s next career began as an employee of the United States Postal Service in Richmond, Va. After 20 years of selfless service he retired from the Postal Service and then he took a job as a pharisaical/bank carrier for five more years. Sitting at home was not an option for someone who was always on the move. Finally, after 50 years of tireless service to his country, U.S. government, and his community, he called it quits to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Andrew was a quiet and private person who always had a positive outlook on life. He often shared childhood memories while growing up in Pageton, WV. He had a special love for the camera, he was always the man behind the lens and rarely in the picture. And, everyone who knew him well, knows just how much he loved cars and the San Francisco 49ers.
Andrew visited New Deliverance Evangelistic Church in Chesterfield, VA, frequently and he allowed the word of God to prick his heart and change his life. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized in 1997. He was a faithful member of his church until his health no longer allowed him to attend on a regular basis.
Andrew transitioned from his earthly body on March 15, 2017 at 7:37 pm. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Willie Mae Campbell; sisters, Estelle Norwood and Viola Anthony; brother, Leonard Campbell; son-n-law, Tony Walker.
Left to cherish his precious memories are his four children, William (Susan); Andrea; Andrew; and Mary; one granddaughter, Maria Campbell; four grandsons William Jr., Cameron, and Joshua Campbell, and Ashton Walker; one great granddaughter, Aaliyah Shufford; three brothers, Willie (Joan) Campbell, Harold Campbell, and James Campbell (Trina Johnson), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends He was an adopted father and grandfather too many.
With special thanks to the Aids and Nurse staffs of Hopewell Health Care Center and Gentivia Hospice of Petersburg, VA.
