The Tool of His Trade
Andrew A. Fredericks felt strongly about the best way to blast a stream of water at a fire. They called him Andy Nozzles.

In training videos, speeches around the country, trade magazine articles ‹ even on the couch in his home ‹ Mr. Fredericks preached the gospel of the solid stream of water aimed hard at the source of the blaze. "He was so proud that his 9-year- old son could tell apart the different nozzles," said Diane Feldman, the managing editor of Fire Engineering, a trade magazine.

It is not an academic debate. Mr. Fredericks, 40, believed that fog nozzles, which disperse water widely, were dangerous because the steam that they produced would burn firefighters who moved close to put out flames. Solid-bore ‹ those were the kind that Andy Nozzles liked.

His wife, Michelle Fredericks, said that her husband relished the chance to pass on the knowledge he had gained fighting fires for 20 years, 16 of them with the New York City Fire Department, most recently with Squad 18. "It was his passion, next to me of course," Mrs. Fredericks said. "He had a passion for teaching."

Remembering Andrew on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

My son was doing a 9/11 assignment for school. He interviewed a friend of Mr. Fredericks. One of the questions was if he knew anyone who was directly affected by the attacks that day. Without hesitation he told us about Andy. He described the training day that is done every year in Andy's memory. I'm so glad he shared his memory and story. We will never forget your sacrifice.

I did not know Andy, but my wife and I had the privilege to meet his wife Michelle at a Relay for Life event in Blue Ridge GA. after 9/11. Michelle shared some very touching stories with me and my wife about Andy and his journeys and accomplishments he had reached in such a shortened life. Before the end of the event, for what ever reason, Michelle was lead to give me a NYFD baseball cap that belonged to Andy. Michelle, I want you to know that I still have this hat and so gratefully share...

My Bracelet

In the days following 9/11 one of our Emergency Response Team members, who was also a municipal volunteer, ordered memorial bracelets. The name of the fallen firefighters was selected at random, I received FF Andrew Fredricks. I have worn this bracelet every anniversary of 9/11, and will continue to do so. I am so sorry for your loss but I am so proud of his, and all of the other fallen, for their dedication and service.

Dear Michelle, I attended the funeral of your husband and was inspired by you and your family's courage. I remember your son carried a football with him that day. I wrote a movie that I believe (and hope) you find uplifting. The film is not about any specific firefighter from the 343 but of the essence of who they all are... an everyman character. I've been working on this for more than 10 years. I would like to discuss it further if you can please contact me. Mostly I would like your...

My name is Hannah and I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. I am researching Firefighter Fredericks and preparing to go on a trip with my school. If there is anything that you would like me to know about Firefighter Fredericks that would help me to know more of his legacy and to help me to properly memorialize him please contact me.

Andy is still an inspiration to the fire service. I wish i had the opportunity to have met him, but his legacy will live on through his reputation and work. The fire service is a better place because of him.
