Loving the Eye of the Storm
It was Hurricane Gloria in 1985 that led Andrew B. Jordan into the firefighting life. With the power out, a neighbor in West Islip, on Long Island, lighted a kerosene lamp that wound up igniting the house. Mr. Jordan thought to back the neighbor's car out of the garage, so there wouldn't be an even bigger catastrophe, then led a disabled woman to safety.

He became a New York City firefighter in 1994 and was assigned to Ladder Company 132 in Brooklyn, nicknamed "The Eye of the Storm." Every day was a joy, despite his two-and-a-half-hour commute. "He loved the firehouse and all the guys that worked there," said his mother, Ellen. He loved even the unromantic parts of the job, like fire inspections, said his father, Thomas, because he saw them as one more way to save lives.

A 36-year-old father of four, he was keenly aware of the risks he faced. When the ladder truck pulled up at a burning building, he was often the first one raised high into the air to battle the flames. "Andrew was going into the bucket at one fire, and this guy said to him, 'Thank God it's you and not me,'" his mother recalled. "Andrew said, 'Thank God it's me and not you.'"

Guest Book

Not sure what to say?

To the Jordon family. Every year Andrew’s Guest Book comes up. Andrew & my son Kenneth went to school in West Islip & were friends. When visiting Ken in FL on 9/11, I watched the ceremonies with him & he would tell me the stories. Truthfully, some I didn’t remember. This year was a different day for me. I watched the ceremonies alone. Ken was called home 4-1/2 years ago. I’m sure they have connected by now. To all families who lost their loved ones & those suffering illness from...

Hello my Name is Nathan. You Don't know me but i just wanted to say that I am thinking about Andrew and His family on this day. Andrew was a hero.

Well uncle Andrew I never got to know you the way that would’ve been right but, that doesn’t mean I didn’t know you. The whole family loves you and talks about you as much as they can but even 19 years later it hurts. My mom will always tell me stories about you with a smile and if I have questions she doesn’t hesitate to tell me about you and your incredible self. I know you were there to greet ur parents and your brother and you’ll be there for everyone else. Godspeed Uncle Andrew until the...

Always remembering, never forgetting. He and my son Kenneth were friends. When visiting Ken in FL on 9/11, he watch the memorial service & I also watched with him as painful as it was. Then he reminisced about all they did together. He would say, Ma remember when ..... My prayers are with the Jorden family on the Anniversary of this day. ❤

Andrew you are and will always be in my thoughts and prayers. May your family be at peace. I am proud to say that you were my friend.

To the family of Andrew. My name is Doug Edel. I went to high school with Andrew which we had a lot of fun times and graduated in 83. I didn't see him until 12 years later we both entered the same fdny academy class of 95. It was great to see a good friend there and we talked a lot about the past and our hopes for our new careers. He ended up in Brooklyn L132 and I in Queens E305. I was heartbroken when I saw Andrews name on the list and have thought about him many times over the years and...

I worked with AJ at Asplundh construction out of the Hicksville yard. What an awesome guy. We had a great time and laughed all the time. He was sooo excited to be having another child. I had a great summer that year working with him. God bless. Damon Gormly.

Went to ground zero for the first time today, saw a white rose on a name that touched my heart and I had to find out more. Terribly sorry for your loss and I will forever hold a place in my heart for all the victims, survivors and their families

To the Jordan Family, today, I'm here with my son Kenneth in FL. As we paused for a moment of silence, Ken said he couldn't watch any more, as he paused thinking about a dear friend of his. He does remind me of the wooden mantel they took for a bumper on the truck, like I remember. I just read Andrew's story. My prayers go out to all of you, in loving memory of Andrew.
