Andy Carey

Obituary

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) - Andy Carey, third baseman for the New York Yankees dynasty of the 1950s that won four straight American League pennants and two World Series, has died at 80.

Daughter Elizabeth Carey tells the New York Times (http://nyti.ms/zPIC61) he died Dec. 15 in California of Lewy body dementia.

Joining the Yankees in 1952, Carey became a regular at third two years later on a team that included Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Elston Howard.

In 1955, he led the AL in triples with 11, and the Yankees won the first of four consecutive pennants. World Series wins came in 1956 and 1958.

He played with Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 1962 with a .260 batting average, 64 home runs and 350 RBIs.

Not sure what to say?

I am a lifelong Yankees fan and especially for the Yankee team of Andy Carey's era. He was the first Yankee baseball card I managed to get in my baseball card pack and I cherished it for years through my teens even though he had been traded. Thanks for the memories Andy . R.I.P.

I am sorry to be this tardy in offering some fond words about my favorite third baseman, Andy Carey! I never knew of this site until minutes ago. But Andy, whom I never had the chance to meet but spoke to on the phone and occasionally wrote to, was one hell of a gentleman. He knew and loved the national pastime for a solid eleven seasons and while he could hit was one tough, defensive third sacker. To Elizabeth his daughter, (and the name of my daughter as well) I offer very belated...

I was romantically involved with Andy for a short time in 1975, It was a very low time for him in his life, but I remember his wonderful outlook and his devilish sense of humor, we remained good friends, consoling each other after failed romances, I was devastated when I heard of his passing as my husband had just died of the same illness, rest in peace dear "champ" you were loved.

Kind of late on this memory but I Had the pleasure of meeting Andy in Sun City, Palm Desert a number of years ago. He had a friend out here and when that friend found out I was a crazy Yankee fan, he invited Andy out to play golf. Well, the best thing in the world happened...it rained! We could not play so we sat around my friend's house and shot the breeze for the next three hours about the Yankee teams of the 50's and 60's (my heroes)....We just had a ball...Andy was the nicest guy in...

Andy's last game was October 2, 1962, as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was the second of three playoff games between the Dodgers and Giants. The Giants won the first game, and were leading the second 5-0 in the sixth. The Dodgers scored two runs and had loaded the bases when Andy, pinch hitting for Willie Davis, came to bat against the lefty Billy O'Dell. Andy got hit with the 2-2 pitch to drive in a crucial run. Lee Walls followed with a three-run double. The Dodgers...
