Anita D. Peterson, age 89 of Rexburg, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg.
She was born May 5, 1924, in Archer, Idaho, to Lelen Weekes and Martha Galbraith Weekes. She attended Archer Elementary, freshman and sophomore years at Archer High School and junior and senior years at Madison High School in Rexburg, graduating from Madison High School. She married Jay Melvin Peterson on May 5, 1945, in Dillon, Mont. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple May 23, 1957. In her early years, she worked in a laundry in Idaho Fall, and in various potato warehouses.
Anita was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; she served for 17 years as ward librarian. She also served as Lyman School PTA president. She was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and especially grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and camping and picking huckleberries.
The family is especially grateful to Mary Peterson for her expertise and loving care, allowing us to keep Anita at home as she wished.
She is survived by her daughter, Zenda Hall, of Pocatello; sons, Melvin (Mary) Peterson, of Blackfoot and Michael (Lois) Peterson, of Rexburg; sister, Maxine (LeRoy) Hope, of Ammon; brother, DeVar (Gwen) Weekes, of Rexburg; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jay Melvin Peterson, March 8, 2003; sisters, Clea Briggs, Delpha Beck, Artella Schneiter, Eva Hubbard, Lillian Bell and Leah Andersen; brother, J.R. Weekes and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Jones Peterson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at 11 a.m., at the Lyman 1st Ward LDS Chapel, 1952 W. 6000 S., Rexburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday evening and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., Tuesday prior to services, both at the church. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery, Archer, Idaho, under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
