Anna Hiller
1924-2023
Bountiful, UT-Anna "Martini" Hiller, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2023, with her children by her side. She was 99 years old. Born January 22, 1924 she was the third of five children to Valentine and Josephine Martini, immigrants from Austria(Italy) and Poland. In 1941, during the turmoil of World War II, Anna left the tiny coal-mining town of Sopris and moved to
Richmond, CA, where she helped her older brother and sister-in-law with their new baby. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bob (Robert Hiller), and they married in 1943. Bob came ashore from his life as a merchant sailor for Standard Oil after the birth of their first child in 1945. Together, they crafted a beautiful life spanning 67 years until Bob's passing in 2011. Bob's career with Standard Oil took them to various places, from
Richmond, CA, to Bountiful, UT,
Grand Junction, CO, and eventually settling back in Bountiful in 1973. In 2023 Anna was again in Grand Junction with her daughter and family. Anna embraced her role as a first-generation American. Family, Roman Catholic faith, parish, and neighborhood communities were the pillars of her life. She cherished her numerous friendships and in her vibrant years was known to always offer a meal or at least a treat to visitors. Anna remained socially active, driving well into her 90s, visiting housebound friends, and enjoying outings with her younger, more mobile friends, particularly her beloved bridge groups and Wolf Pack friends. Anna had a keen eye for a good deal and found joy in collecting various furniture, art and household items all earmarked for her extended family. She was a fan of yard sales, thrift stores, and coupon shopping, especially if the coupons involved trying out new eateries or restaurants. Both Anna and Bob enjoyed travel. She was easily captivated by the world's beauty and could be visibly moved by its grandeur. Anna was equally sensitive to the world's hardships, often brought to tears by news stories of war, natural disasters and cruelty. A life-long Democrat she was not at all shy about sharing her social, political and other views. Anna and Bob have three children, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Clara, her children Ronald, Jeanne Godwin (Richard), John and their families. Preceding her in death were her husband Robert, her sister Sylvia, older brother Frank and his wife Caroline, brother-in-law Matthew, younger brother William and his wife Barbara, and daughter-in-law Catherine. A funeral Mass for both Anna and Bob will be celebrated at 1:pm on January 13, 2024, at St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Bountiful, UT, with internment the following Monday into the columbarium at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in
Grand Junction, CO. Remembrances and condolences can be shared online at
https://www.lecacy.com. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations be made to St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Bountiful, UT.
