Joseph H. Brown, Jr. Funeral Home, P.A. - Baltimore Obituary

Anne Dow (Newton) Burke was born on July 25, 1945 in Baltimore MD to the
late Laura C. Fields Newton (Churchill) and Howard P. Newton, Jr.,
affectionately called "Buddy". She is the second of their three children. Her
sister is Shirley A. Tucker and her brother is Howard P. Newton, III. She
attended public schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, graduating
from Western Senior High School in 1963. She attended the University of
Maryland at College Park majoring in Nursing. At College Park, Anne was
among one of the first classes to be integrated at the university. She graduated
with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and received her license as a Registered
Nurse.

Anne worked at the University of Maryland Hospital and Medical System
for her entire career in the Premature Nursery, Pediatric Emergency Room,
Continuity Clinic, Specialty Clinics, and Ambulatory Center. She also worked
as a Research Nurse. Unfortunately, in December 1996, Anne started to have
health problems that deprived her the use of her right hand and arm which
forced her to retire early from her beloved nursing field.

James S. Burke met Anne while they both worked at the University of
Maryland hospital. James married Anne on September 20, 1969 and they had
three children - the late Justine Adrianne, Jason Howard, and Ericka Lynne.
All three children attended college and graduated, which was one of their
proudest moments. Anne loved to travel and some of her favorite states were
California and Hawaii. She also enjoyed her trips to Jamaica and Mexico. The
whole family also frequently visited Wildwood, NJ. If Anne was going on a
trip, she would be so excited and would smile from ear to ear days in advance.

Anne was a lifelong, deeply committed 3rd generation member of
St. Katherine of Alexandria Episcopal Church. Anne cultivated the love of the
Lord with Justine and the twins at St. Katherine. During her time at
St. Katherine, she taught church school, served numerous terms as a Vestry
member, was elected Vice President and Secretary of the Women's Guild,
chaired Women's Day, served as the United Thank Offering custodian, was an
informal advisor to the Youth Group, served on several Dinner Dance
Committees, was the Church Registrar, and worked with the Churchill Ross
Scholarship Fund (which is partially named after her mother).

Anne loved reading (it wasn't strange for her to finish a book in one or two
days) and cooking. Prior to her initial stroke, she also enjoyed sewing and
gardening. Her favorite T.V. shows were Perry Mason, Nature Studies, NCIS,
Stal'gate, and Guy Fieri's Shows - especially Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. In the
past, she enjoyed following the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. The one thing
Anne loved to do above all others, was to spend time with her family, friends,
and co-workers. Her favorite hymns are Amazing Grace, May the Work I've
Done Speak for Me, How Great Thou Art, and Let All Mortal Flesh Keep
Silent.

If at the last moment of her life, Anne had an opportunity to pray, This
might have been her final prayer:

REMEMBER ME
Remember my
smiles and laughter
Remember my tears
Remember my abilit
y to assist you
Remember my
jobs completed

If you can remember any of these then you will REMEMBER ME

Anne transitioned from this life to walk with angels on Sunday,
December 31, 2017. She leaves to hold dear her memories, love, and smile: her
twins, Jason and Ericka; daughter-in law, Pamela and granddaughter, Lillian;
sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Franklin Tucker; brother and sister-in-law,
Howard and Beverly Newton; sister-in-law's, Daisy "Sis" Alexander and Doris
Johnson; loved nieces, nephews, cousins, "adopted" daughters, sons, and
god-grandsons; great friend, Carolyn; Godson, Leon; her wonderful
St. Katherine family, New Life Commission family, and a host of friends.

Anne will always be remembered for her tenderness, humor, and empathy
that she possessed.
