North Berwick – Annie M. Hagar, 84, of North Berwick died early Tuesday after a series of long-standing illnesses. She was born January 24, 1924 in Bangor, Maine. Her parents were Mildred and Leon Bussell. Ever a woman of courage and fortitude, at the beginning of World War II she enlisted with the Canadian Air Corps, because she too young to enlist in the American Forces. She married Edward W. Hagar, who was then a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and later the town manager of South Berwick and a realtor late in life. She was an artist and apparel shop owner in South Berwick, Maine, where she was a member of the First Parish Federated Church. She and her husband retired to the South until she returned to the Southern Maine area after his death. She was an avid reader, a staunch Democrat, and a rabid Red Sox fan. In her later years, her schedule evolved around televised Red Sox games.
She is survived by her daughter Marilynn Hagar of North Berwick, her son Frederick Hagar of Berwick, four grandchildren; Christopher Cavalieri, Anna Goodkin, Dale Hagar, Theresa Hagar, and several great-grandchildren. Annie was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Joyce Cavalieri. Arrangements for cremation have been made through McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home. Graveside Services are Saturday June 14th at 11AM in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick with Rev. Donna Lee Muise, pastor First Parish Federated Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor her memory may be made to the Hurd Library, 41 High St., North Berwick, ME. 03906

I met Annie when I started working at the D. A. Hurd Library in North Berwick. When she visited the library, we always had interesting discussions on a variety of subjects. In recent years, I enjoyed visiting with her when I dropped books off at her home. She will continue in my memory as a warm, intelligent woman and a valued friend.
