Anthony Tony F. Calvanese, Sr., 92, son of the late Andrea and Rose (Parisi) Calvanese and recent resident of Meadowbrook Manor of Agawam died Wednesday morning after a brief illness. Tony was a veteran of World War II serving proudly in the Battle of Bulge, seventy years ago this week. He was a Purple Heart recipient as part of the 825th Tank Destroyers Battalion. For most of his life, he was employed by WICO Electric Company in West Springfield and was the President of the local AFL-CIO representing his fellow union employees in the late sixties. Tony is predeceased by his wife, Mary Pepe-Calvanese, his son Andrew, his brothers Andrew, Frank, and Joseph, his sisters Philomena Lilly Gormally, and Gloria Hickson. Tony is survived by his son Anthony, Jr. and husband William Quinn of Orlando, FL, two grandsons, Anthony and Joseph of Hampden, a brother, Sam Calvanese and his wife Marilyn, and a sister, Rose Salvetti all of Springfield. Tony also is survived by his sister-in-law, Millie Landry, and a brother-in-law Anthony Pepe and his wife, Carol. He also leaves behind many loving nephews, nieces, cousins and their children as well as many friends. The family would like to send special thanks to Mary and Michael Grimaldi of Agawam who provided daily care during Tonys senior years. The family is also grateful to Lori Panadis and Jorge Barbosa for their compassion and care during the last month of his life. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30am from the AGAWAM CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 745 Cooper Street with a Mass in Sacred Heart Church at 11. The burial will be private. Calling hours will precede the service on Saturday from 9-10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

We are so saddened to hear of Tony's passing. It was always great to see him cruising around the neighborhood or stopping in at Valenti's. He will be missed; please accept our sincerest condolences.

"Uncle Tony" will always live in our memory. I grew up with the Valentis and have many many funny stories and memories of him. May he rest in peace and now he is with Mary, his son, and Yoli. I know he is happy.
