Anthony James Sciorrotta passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. He was born on April 1, 1952 in Des Moines to Congetta (Pirillo) Sciorrotta and Nicholas Sciorrotta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Anthony spent his life building a foundation for the three areas of his life that meant the most to him: his career in the medical field, his passion for athletics and coaching, and most of all for his family.

His Catholic education included St. Johns and Dowling High School. He graduated in the class of 1970 and moved on to the University of Wyoming after earning a full ride football scholarship. He transferred to Morningside College in Sioux City, IA to finish his secondary education where he was active in his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon and continued to play football. He graduated in the class of 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

He was accepted to the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, IA and attended from 1974-1978. He completed his Rotating Internship at the Richmond Heights General Hospital in Ohio and later became the Clinic Co-director/Emergency Physician until he left Ohio in 1980. With a desire to move home, Anthony settled in Colfax, IA where he established Colfax Medical Clinic as the owner and primary care physician for eight years.

He then transitioned into Occupational Medicine. He worked for several companies within the field and completed an Advanced Course in Occupational Medicine from the University of Iowa. He became board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Preventative Medicine in Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 1993. In March of 1995 he established Occupational Health Center, PC and provided his services to numerous businesses and industries throughout the Des Moines Metro area. He sought additional education from the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Preventative Medicine and received a Master of Public Health in 2000. Even as he began to focus on other passions in his life, Anthony still contributed his expertise in the medical field to Principal Group Life and Disability and to Sedgwick Insurance Company. He also continued his long relationship with TMC Transportation.

Later in life Anthony was able to devote his time to one of his greatest passions, coaching football, but his passion for sports began as an athlete. At Dowling, he participated in track, baseball, and football. His football career continued into college, playing for both the Wyoming Cowboys and the Morningside Chiefs. As a young adult he enjoyed slow pitch softball, flag football, and golf.

This passion for sports eventually led him to a great coaching career. Over the years he coached high school football for four different schools: Colfax-Mingo, Dowling, Dallas Center-Grimes, and most recently Valley. Anthony's accomplishments included many victories, strong runs deep into the playoffs, and even a 4A State Championship, but his success went beyond the wins and losses and was measured by the ambition of his players. He cherished his relationships with his fellow coaches and his love of the game influenced many teams, many players, and continued to his children and grandchildren.

Most of all, Anthony cherished his time with his family, sharing 40 wonderful years with his wife, Roxanne. Together they had three children. Their oldest son, Anthony Joseph Sciorrotta and wife, Casandra have two sons, Dante and Dominic. Their only daughter, Anne Nicole Sciorrotta-Schmitz and husband, Jason have a son, Henry and daughter, Conjetta. Their youngest son, Andrew Christopher Sciorrotta and wife, Tricia have twin daughters, Isabella and Gianna. With his three children and six grandkids, Anthony enjoyed many memorable moments including fishing trips to Canada and spending time at their condo at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Anthony is preceded in death by both of his parents, his father-in-law Edward Amick, and other members of his extended family. He is survived by his brothers, Sam Sciorrotta Sr. and Joseph Sciorrotta; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Amick; as well as many beloved members of the Sciorrotta and Amick family.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. A rosary will begin at 4:30 PM and visitation hours will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
