Werthmann, a life-long resident of Davenport, died at his home on November 3, 2011, after a long illness. He was 87 years old. Tony was born August 18, 1924 to George and Dorothea (Volz) Werthmann. He married Mary E. Stolze in 1948, and she preceded him in death in 1986. He married Genie Thomas Stolze in 1989. After attending St. Ambrose Academy and serving in the Infantry during World War II, Tony and his brother Paul together operated their family's business, Werthmann's Home Bakery for ten years. He then worked for a short time with the United States Postal Service, but spent the remainder of his career as an electrician, refrigeration supervisor, and estimator at the Rock Island Arsenal. He retired in 1985. He was a lifelong handyman and never shied away from attempting to fix anything that was broken. He was always willing to help a friend or neighbor with repairs around the house. After retiring he picked up the hobbies of oil painting and woodworking which he enjoyed, and for which he showed much talent. In fact, he built much of the furniture currently in his home. He was a great family man and loved family get-togethers to reminisce and catch-up with the lives of his large extended family. He was a truly devoted member of St. Alphonsus Parish in Davenport. He is survived by his wife, Genie, sons David, St. Louis, MO, and Gary (Jerilyn), Davenport; two sisters, Teresa (William R.) Cassatt, Sterling, IL, and Margaret (Eugene) Voss, Peoria, IL; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren all of Davenport, five stepchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George, Frank, Richard, Joseph, and Paul and by sisters Dorothy Rappel, Marie Hoeppner, and Leona Fairbanks, and a step-son. Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Church, Assumption High School, or to Genesis Hospice Care.
