Not sure what to say?

I took a class from him in Systems Theory in the late 1960's and can remember his sunny disposition and evident joy of teaching. That I can remember his introduction to Markov processes after 50 years I think is a testament to his teaching ability.

I was a friend and colleague of Arch's in the Engineering College. He was an excellent example of a scholar, teacher, and academic leader. My condolences to his family.

Arch was a major influence on my career and I regarded him as a friend and mentor during my early days at um as an assistant and associate professor. His book (Naylor and Sell) served as my introduction to functional analysis and was an accessible "engineering" perspective on the subject. Arch was a mentor and encourage colleague when I joined the ECE faculty in 1972. I wish I had known he was back in Ann Arbor to reconnect with him. Condolences to his family and all friends and colleagues.

My first class at UMich in the spring of '93 was his last before he retired. He told us his plans, and I'm thrilled to see that he got to do all those things. I still remember the silly "boop" sound he made when two FSM states could not be merged.

Sorry for this loss. I did not have the opportunity to meet him, but his 1971 book on Linear Operator Theory has been incredibly useful for me (and countless others).
