Read MoreMy father, William Mackie, was a colleague of Dr. Jones at Virginia Tech in the early 60's, and his son and I were mischievous playmates. I remember Dr. Jones as a gentle wise presence with a smile that came straight from his heart. I will keep Coleman and all the family in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time. I hope that you will be sustained by pleasant memories of a good man.

Archer Jones was the Dean of our college when I joined North Dakota State University's History Department in 1977. One of my fondest memories of Archer was how enthusiastically he discussed questions of history and historical interpretation.
