Always Ready With Advice
Arlene Fried, the vice president and assistant general counsel at Cantor Fitzgerald, was a hard-driving lawyer who handled multimillion-dollar initial public offerings during the dot-com era. At Cantor, she played an essential role in the creation and public financing of eSpeed. Young Wall Street hopefuls constantly sought her out for advice, and she was always willing to give it.

But there was another Arlene Fried. She enjoyed juicy gossip and shopping until she dropped - a cliché, perhaps, but her friend Nina Gaspar said it really was like that.

Mrs. Fried, 49, of Roslyn Heights, N.Y., was also a dedicated wife and mother to her three daughters. "It was not unusual for Arlene to come rushing into a parent school conference or a school play, a few minutes late, out of breath and apologetic - but she was always there," said Ms. Gaspar's husband, Andrew.

On Sept. 11, Mrs. Fried was trying to help a young lawyer who wanted to know where he should apply for a job, said her husband, Kenny. She returned the lawyer's telephone message at 8:44 a.m. He was not there, so she left a message. Four minutes later, the first plane struck.

Remembering Arlene on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

I think of and miss Arlene. I miss the phone calls to wake me up so I would not be late for our jogging dates. I miss our discussions and debates on different topics.

Bless you and your family.

I miss Arlene's chhery voice on the phone each weekend morning reminding me to get ready to meet for a jog. The 4 runners talked about every topic and then resolved any issues or problems over coffee after the run.

I was a young law school student at Columbia Law School with Arlene. I lent Arlene my notes (which her daughters admired for being so neat) in return for Arlene's sage advice and guidance. She is always in my thoughts. My prayers to her family whom she adored and loved.

You are remembered. Though I never knew you, your life obviously provided immense happiness to many others. It remains difficult accepting the senseless acts which took so many innocent lives. It is difficult reading the many memorials without the anger and frustration resurfacing. So as this 14 anniversary comes to a close, and yours is the last memorial I read, I will take the headline of your written memorial to heart. And trust your advice would be to value the memories of happiness,...

I pass your memorial park often and it always brings a smile to my face because I remember your face always with a huge smile. I think of you and your entire family often. You are missed by all who know you. You have a warm and rich legacy that has been carried on through your girls and your grandchildren. It hurts to know that you have not met your grandchildren. You would have had such pleasure watching them grow up.

I didn't know you Arlene, but last week i visited ground zero and as i looked to the memorial site my hand went to a name, when i looked down it was your name it gave me a strange feeling, because of all the names your's was fried which is my husband family name. I came back to Israel with your name in my heart and i have prayed for you since that moment.

I've been reflecting on your life Arlene. You are missed.
