She fell in love with the piano at the age of five years old, and it guided and defined the rest of her life. Not sure what to say?

Arletta changed my life. When I was a young freshman at Mt. Hood Community College in 1978, I began studying with her. In time, our work changed from piano to composition and I stayed with that until I got my Ph.D in 1989. She was a lovely person and I so enjoyed seeing her whenever I could. She helped me so much and I won awards because of her - she played on my Senior recital at Linfield - just a cherished person in my life. Who would I be without her? Arletta was an icon of the Oregon Music Teachers Association, beloved by all for her original pieces in jazz style and her ability to play both jazz and classical styles--a rare quality. She was kind, generous and sweet to her colleagues. (Her son Patrick is an accomplished professional bassist who did a stint with Frank Zappa.) Arletta was one of Oregon's musical treasures! She was adored and will be missed by many.

I lived near Arletta and took lessons from her before my children were born. I also got to test out some of her jazz music for kids before they were published. Both of my children, Joseph and Julia, studied with her until their H.S. years. Her encouragement and sense of humor was always much appreciated. I visited with her on her last birthday and she was still as sharp as ever. What a gal!

What a gift Arletta was to my son, Scott Rubey. She encouraged his ability to play by ear but also provided classical training. Given the musical background she provided, Scott went on to receive a bachelor's degree in jazz studies at the U of O. He played in clubs in Eugene for several years following his graduation. Her son, Robert, also influenced his composition work, and son Patrick was a New Age influence. How grateful we are for this family.

Arletta, with her kindness, patience, knowledge, and enthusiasm, instilled a true lifelong love of music in my son, Aron Dobos, her longtime student. I am forever grateful to her. Please accept our sincere condolences. She will always be remembered. Julia and Laszlo Dobos
