I was a student at the U of D, but I was never Arnie's student. I just ran into him one day on the mall in 1968 as he stood slightly bemused, wondering what he had got himself into in the strange world that was Newark, DE, in those days. I can close my eyes and see him standing there, dressed rather formally and holding his old-fashioned book bag. In my mind, I see the sly smile flitting across his face. Arnie Gordentstein was my Professor for American Studies at the University of Delaware in the mid-1970's. He not only taught me much about American literature, but also about political action. Who could forget the great camp-out protest on the academic mall at U of D when Arnie was denied tenure!

He remained a life-long friend, but our contact was limited to a holiday card each December over the past several years. It was as I checked to update my records on his address to send off...

Arnold Gordenstein taught me American Studies at University of Delaware. He opened my eyes to Freudian impacts in American literature as well as other things.
He was among the brightest and interesting faculty members at UD in the late 1960's early 1970's. Mark Delmerico
