Rigby Harting and Hagan Funeral Home - Media Obituary

Arthur (Art) Gorham Baker Jr., a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, an esteemed surgeon, and a cherished member of the community, passed away on April 9, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on July 15, 1935, in Ridley Park, PA, Art's life was marked by compassion, service, and a profound commitment to his family and profession.

Art's journey began in Ridley Park, where he attended Ridley Park High School before pursuing higher education at Denison University, graduating in 1957. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1961. In 1960, he married his beloved wife, Margie Moore Baker, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship.

During the Vietnam War, Captain Baker selflessly served his country for two years as a surgeon in the United States Army.  He was stationed at Camp Zama in Japan, where he treated soldiers fresh from the conflict.

Following his military service, he dedicated himself to vascular surgery, becoming a highly respected figure in his field. His career included positions at Taylor Hospital, Riddle Hospital, and Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. Art's leadership was evident as he served as Chief of Surgery at Taylor Hospital and later as Chief of Staff.

Even in retirement, Art's commitment to service remained unwavering. He continued to contribute to the medical community as a member of the Crozer Chester Board of Directors. Beyond medicine, Art was a man of many passions. He found solace in music, showcasing his talent as a pianist, and nurturing his garden with the same care and dedication he brought to his patients. His micro vineyard on Ogden Avenue, from which he produced his renowned Indian Hill Chardonnay, was a testament to his love for horticulture and viticulture. Art was also a long-time member of the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church and Swarthmore Rotary and was a volunteer for many community organizations.

Art's legacy of kindness, professionalism, and generosity will be forever cherished by his surviving wife, Margie Moore Baker, his children Arthur Deane Baker (Bonnie), Kathryn Moore Baker, and Andrew Davis Baker, as well as his beloved granddaughters, extended family, friends, and colleagues. In his memory, let us honor his life by continuing to serve others with the same passion and dedication that defined his remarkable journey.

His service will be held Saturday May 11th at 1:00pm at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. 727 Harvard Ave Swarthmore, PA.

Not sure what to say?

We have many fond memories of Art which include golf at Lake Paupac, Christmas caroling at Ogden Ave. and listening to him play that wonderful Schubert Impromptu!
Art will be so sorely missed!

Kathy and Andy are two enduring legacies for a man with a life well lived. Continue to thrive annd give and you do him honor.

He celebrated his birthdays in the best way at Paupac with much cake and his beloved ice cream.

I worked with Arthur for almost 50 years at Taylor. Art was a consummate surgeon, a gentleman, and a gentle man. Many were the times when my own partners were tied up that Art or his late partner, Bill Erb would assist me with a problem in the OR.
My deepest sympathies to Art’s family. May his memory be a blessing.

He was a great man ! Always enjoyed conversations with him.

My Condolences to Dr Bakers family and our Taylor family. He was truly an amazing surgeon and a gentleman. He always greeted me when coming on 2 East to see a patient or write in a chart. It was my pleasure to help him in whatever he needed. Heaven has another angel, RIP Doctor Baker, Love Edie Ball, 2E PCS

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of God, family and friends. Please take comfort in the words found at 2nd Thessalonians 2:16,17.
