Mr. Cotterell was a humble and thoughtful man, an inspiration to me both on the baseball diamond and in the classroom. He provided that spark I needed as a high school sophomore to find joy in learning. He replaced the tedium of memorizing names and dates with analysis of issues. I still remember reading Richard Hofstadter under Mr. Cotterell's tutelage. He surely lived a long and fulfilling life, touching the hearts and opening the minds of all those who were privileged to have known...

Mr. Cotterell was one of the best teachers I ever had. I recently retired as a college professor, and I had plenty of great teachers, not least at SHS, but he has always stood out in my memory of my four or five greatest teachers.
