Mr. Hess was a member of the Social Security Alumni Association for many years. Recently, we were pleased to honor him with our highest award for his many year's of service in the cause of social security for all people. The memory of his many accomplishments will remain a part of us for as long as we live.

Like Stan Brooks, I was a SSA associate of Art for several years. The American people were richly blessed through the extraordinary caring and competent services Art provided in developing our Social Security program, especially those aspects relating to disability and Medicare. I remember well the Hess family as I grew up in the Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church in Baltimore which they attended and where my father was minister. As a graduate student in mathematics, I had the good fortune to work for the Social Security Administration during the summer of 1965, the time when Medicare was getting underway, and it was very clear then that Arthur Hess enjoyed the respect of the whole organization. I worked for Social Security for 43 years and several of those years I worked for Mr. Hess. It was men like him that made SSA so important to so many people. His family should be so proud of the things he accomplished in life..He will be missed.
