I arrived in the UPI Paris Bureau when Arthur was the bureau chief. He was encouraging and supportive and I was sorry that after six months he moved to the IHT. However, we stayed in touch and Donelle and he often invited me to dinner. I returned to London in 1982 and never saw him again but remember him with affection and respect.

I knew Art from our UPI days. In the mid-1970s, when I was visiting Paris, I stopped in at the bureau (I was UPI editor in Washington at the time) and he graciously took me to one of his favorite restaurants (au chez eux, I believe) where we consumed food and wine to the edge of stupefaction. Next day he assigned a woman "to show me around the real Paris." Don´t recall her name or who she was, but it was a marvelous day. Dear Michael, I was a good friend of your fathers for the last 20+ years of his life, primarily during his marriage to Gladys, my dear friend and colleague.
