Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood Obituary

Arthur Louis “Art” Humphrey, Jr., age 70 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024 at AMG Specialty Hospital in Muncie following a brief illness after surgery.  He was born Aug. 24, 1953 in Elwood, the son of Arthur Louis and Mary Belle (Mortimore) Humphrey, Sr.  Art was a member of Wendell L. Willkie High School class of 1972.  He worked as a machine operator and later a fork lift operator for General Cable Company in Marion for over 40 years and retired in 2015.  Art married the love of his life, Deborah A. “Debbie” Sullivan on July 21, 1973, and they spent 50 years of marriage together raising their family.  They celebrated their 50th anniversary with their entire family in Aruba in 2023.

Art was a member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368 and Quincy Masonic Lodge #230.  He loved to work outside in his yard, and especially enjoyed mowing for himself and others.  Art was an avid deer hunter and fisherman.  He liked to sing karaoke, and he was known as a good singer.  More than anything, he enjoyed spending time in his pool and playing with his grandchildren.  Art was an avid Indianapolis Colts football fan, and he watched the Colts win on New Year’s Eve sitting alongside his family at the rehab center.  More than anything, Art was absolutely devoted to his family, and he will be dearly missed.

Art’s family includes his wife, Deborah A. “Debbie” Humphrey of Elwood; son, Eric (Chrissie) Humphrey of McCordsville; daughter, Heidi Durr (Rich Gutierrez) of Noblesville; 4 grandchildren, Zoe Humphrey, Kai Humphrey, Sophia Durr, and Macey Durr; 3 siblings, Wilbur Hartley of Florida, Janet Humphrey of Marion, and Karen (Jerry) Jones of Florida; brothers and sisters in-law, Vicky Lumsdon of Monticello, David Morrow of Elwood, Jim (Deb) Morrow of Elwood, Billy (Veronica) Sullivan of Elwood, George (Brenda) Sullivan of Fishers, Becky (Bill) Walters of Noblesville, and Rhonda Sullivan of Elwood; best friend, Jim (Kaye) Sorrell of LaFountain; “grand-pups”, Oliver and Ozzy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; 4 siblings, Verle Hartley, Eddie Hartley, Melvin Humphrey, and Pam Wright; in-laws, Bill and Sophia Sullivan; brother-in-law, Mark Sullivan; and sister-in-law, Deborah Morrow.

A funeral service celebrating Art’s life will be conducted at 4:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Matthew Seibel of East Main Street Christian Church officiating.  The funeral will begin with a Masonic Lodge memorial ritual and will end with an Elks Lodge memorial service.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 to 4 pm prior to the funeral on Friday at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Indiana Wildlife Federation through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
