We are so sorry to hear of Arthur's passing. We spent an afternoon with him and Frances in May 2013. As always, Arthur had opinions on a number of subjects, and we had an interesting discussion about the status of the science of Mycology. He was active in the Gulf States Mycological Society and helped me with many identifications of southern fungi. His contributions to the science of Mycology are too numerous to list, and we will miss his friendship.

Dr. Welden very patiently helped me to identify various mystifying "weeds" that I found on my levee wanderings. I loved to go to his office and see all the specimens in cases. I was not a science girl, and his knowledge and interest was a source of fascination to me. His attitude was that of an excellent teacher: willing to share and to help the inquiring mind. To this day, I wander on the levee better informed and still find myself occasionally staring at "mystifying" weeds. My condolences to the Welden family.

Arthur was a true Southern gentleman and Mycologist and as others has said full of wit had charm. I will always remember his mentoring and friendship with the Mycological Society.

So sorry to learn of Arthur's death. He was always so interesting during our butterfly expeditions; and always enjoyed a cigar.

We are going to miss Dr.Welden very much. We will especially miss his philosophical and humorous approach to
problems small and large. Conella Blair
and I recall his kindness and concern for others.

Arthur was also a whimsical poet!
And I'll always remember Arthur's charm and wit.
Frances, I am so very, very sorry...

I was so sorry to hear of Arthur Welden's death. I grew up next door, at 7834 Willow Street, and Arthur and Frances were the most wonderful neighbors we ever could have asked for. My family and I loved Arthur's wit and good humor and sociability. As a child, I learned a lot about plants, insects, and science in general from them both. I've kept in touch with the Weldens over the years, and Arthur was still just as I remembered: always ready with a story, a laugh, and a kind word. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and his interest in them and his curiosity about the world shone bright. I know he will be dearly missed by Frances, his children and grandchildren, his former students, and all the other people, like me, who were taught, entertained, and inspired by him.
