Serenity Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Roanoke Obituary

Athenia Betha Hickman 99 of Christiansburg, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018.

Well my family after 99 years and 4 days, I am finally at rest.  Born July 15th 1919 to Rosa and Johnny Betha.  I was married to Roy Giles Hickman.  I had 9 children, Janet, Betty , Eddie, Ruth, Jean, Thelma, William, Michael and Paul in that order, 21 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and great great great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Roosevelt Mach and Woodrow “Woody” Hickman. Daughters-in-law, Linda W. Hickman, Barbara Hickman and Carolyn Tolliver.

I know today is harder for some but I loved each and everyone of you.  I’m sorry for the tears but I want you to just remember the Happy times.  We all have to face this so be prepared.  Live a good life make me proud, I’ve had and seen it all, the good, bad, ugly and beautiful.  Just like my daughter Betty use to say, this is a time to celebrate and rejoice.  On those dark and lonely days when you feel sad, just think of a happier time when I made you smile.  This is a time for rest for me and Lord knows I needed it.  Its been a long time coming.  I want to thank the ones who came to see me on my special day and my angel cakes wanting to see her granny, she came all the way from Charlotte by herself.  Now, I want to thank a few people who has showed their love for me through the years.  My Sunshine girl Becky who would work 12 to 8 and come sit with me all day, instead of going home going to bed.  Linda Joy, thank you and Nikita so much for being here for me through the years no matter what state you were in.  And there was Kristin.  You always would call or Just like Linda, no matter where you were if I was in the Hospital, I knew you would be there any time day or night.  My people from Hospice, Coleen, Beth, Lady Kathy,  Mrs. Nancy Nixon who for years helped me and was a dear friend.

My grandson, Leslie who after church would come to see me and paint my nails, my son Eddie who would pop in anytime, thank you all so much and may God Bless you all; my grandson Eddie who would bring my daughter Janet up anytime.  Thanks to the Minister of the day for doing this for me.  I wanted this to be a family affair to say my last Goodbyes.  Thank you all and may Jehovah shine down on you.  And my lost granddaughter who found her way home,  your help has meant  so much -thank you.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018, 1:00PM, with family visitation Friday, July 27, 2018 6-8PM at Serenity.
