Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

Audrey Frances Miller Hastings passed from this life to eternity on May 14, 2025, at United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, WA. She was born in Clovis, NM on April 21, 1932, the oldest of four children born to Hardy Wm Miller and Jane Ann Cunningham Miller. She died as she lived, surrendered to Jesus, and on her own terms with equal measures of grit and grace.

Mom graduated from Boles Home High School, Quinlan, TX in 1948 and from Abilene Christian College, Abilene, TX in 1952. After graduating from college, she lived and worked in the Minneapolis/St Paul, MN area for several years and then taught school in TX and NM before moving to Mt Vernon, WA in 1967 to be near her then in-laws. She was employed by the Burlington-Edison School District in Burlington, WA for 25 years before retiring as an Assistant Superintendent in 1994.

Mom was a longtime member of the Skagit Valley Church of Christ in Burlington and a member of the Kennewick Church of Christ during her years living in Kennewick, WA.  In addition to being a devoted and caring church member, she was active in various civic organizations including the Early Risers Toastmasters Club in Mount Vernon. Despite the demands of her career and community obligations, Mom was intentional in her focus on her family, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who brought her great joy.

Before and after retirement she spent many enjoyable hours making quilts and blankets for babies with several charity organizations. Mom lovingly pieced quilts for each of her children and grandchildren and had begun making quilts for all of her fifteen great-grandchildren.

Mom loved well and was well-loved. Among those grieving her passing are her two sons, one daughter, and their spouses: Rick and Charlotte Hastings of Spokane, WA; Beverly and Charles Dooley of Bellingham, WA; and Robert and Tammy Hastings of Richland, WA. Her grandchildren: Elise (Bobby) Bennett of Mount Vernon, WA; Steven (Brianna) Owen of Bayview, WA; Robyn (Sam) Turner of Seguin, TX; Lauren Hastings of Bellingham, WA; Ciel Hastings of Tucson, AZ. Step-grandchildren: Jessica Platt of Chula Vista, CA; Josh Sanders of Virginia Beach, VA; Alie Boon-Dooley of Seattle, WA; and Katie Boon-Dooley of Denver, CO. Fifteen great-grandchildren aging from 2 months to 28 years old. She is also survived by her youngest sibling, Eugene Miller of Yukon, OK.

Preceding her in death were her parents and numerous family members including her two sisters, Laura Baker and Judith Neff, both of Texas.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the ACU at United General Hospital for their compassionate care during Mom’s final days.

Viewing will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Thursday, May 29th, with services on May 30th: Memorial Service at 1:00 pm, Graveside Service at 2:00 pm, and reception immediately following. All services will be held at Hawthorne Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Mount Vernon, WA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Audrey Hastings Bible Fund at Skagit Valley Church of Christ, 215 S Gardner Rd, Burlington, WA 98233

Not sure what to say?

I´m so sorry for your loss.

Audrey was a hard working and loving indivividual who I met when we both worked at Roosevelt Elementary in Burlington. We hit it off as friends right away. I remember her accent and laugh in particular. She always was so sweet, I loved being around her right away. Family was her "heart". My deepest sympathy goes out to her family.
