Augusta Sternberg Rubin "Gus" Gold

1927 - 2018

GOLD, AUGUSTA "Gus" STERNBERG RUBIN, of Miami and Indiatlantic, FL, passed away Tuesday after a long illness. She was 90. Born in Manchester, England, on May 14, 1927, Gus lost her father at age 3 and was raised by her mother. When World War II threatened Britain, she was sent to live with relatives in Dublin, Ireland. At the end of the war, she fell in love with an American soldier from Florida, Marvin Rubin. She sailed to America on the first civilian ship after the war and landed in New York to settle in Miami. The brief marriage produced two daughters, Wendy and Gail. As a single mother in Miami Beach in the post-war era, Gus was a hard-working mother in a world that had little opportunity for divorced immigrant women. She worked for the Miami Furniture Company and established herself as an administrator and sales person. In 1958, she married Leonard Gold and had two more children, Michael and David. She helped her husband start his own insurance agency in Coral Gables and also sold revolutionary self-inking rubber stamps for the Perma Stamp Co. In the 1970s, now a grandmother, Gus sold homes for real estate firms including Pyms Suchman and Leibert and Associates. Determination, persistence and guts were always her trademark. In 1995, she retired with Leonard to Indiatlantic, in Brevard County. Her last years were at home in the care of her nurse "moms," Marlena James, Janette Hawkins and wonderful helpers. Augusta is survived by daughters Wendy Rubin (June Howard) and Gail Kaplan (Fred Schmidt); sons Michael Gold (Martha Gold) and David Gold (Sigrid Gold); six grandchildren Linda Kaplan, Kim Kaplan Gross (Michael Gross) Howard Kaplan (Lisa Kaplan) Hannah Gold Nicole Gold and Julia Gold; and seven great grandchildren. Everett Steadman, Lauren Steadman, Lindsey Steadman, Seth Kaplan, Jeremy Gross, Robert Kaplan, Eli Gross ) & six great great grandchildren Christian Longhurst, Evelyn Steadman, Logan Lavine, Dakota Lavine, Joey Dover and Tommy Dover. Graveside service will be held at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo at 5900 SW 77th Ave. in Miami, followed by a small reception at the Mt. Nebo Chapel.
