I served my general surgical residency at the combined Bess Kaiser- Emanuel program from 1982-1987. The surgical staff at Kaiser were instrumental in our education and training. My experience was greatly enhanced by scrubbing, rounding and doing clinics with Gus. His cases in the OR could be like conducting a symphony. You only had so much time so you have to know when to go fast and when to go slow but always be precise. If I recorded his instructions during a case I think anyone could...
