Not sure what to say?

I have just learned of Dr. Barbara Bryant´s passing last month. I had the honor of serving as a member --and peer-elected chairperson-- of the U.S. Census´ Advisory Committee for the Hispanic Population during Dr. Bryant´s tenure as director. Not only was she routinely available despite her busy schedule, but was also attentive to suggestions from the different advisory committees for the diverse ethnic communities, as well as the various á propos professional committees involved. The...

Barbara was a beloved public servant and widely recognized leader in the statistical community. I knew her for several decades, first meeting her when she headed the Census Bureau and I directed the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Upon leaving Census, she continued to share her expertise in academia and public service. We sought her advice on major research projects, including with the National Academies. Her extensive knowledge and significant contributions were widely recognized by those...

Our sincere condolences on your loss to Randy, Lois and Linda, their children and grandchildren. We fondly remember Barbara and John as wonderful neighbors and friends on the shores of the Upper Mystic Lake in Arlington, MA. Peter and Linda Braun.

We met the Bryant´s at Camp Michigania. Barbara was an impressive, brilliant woman. We always enjoyed chatting with her. And we enjoyed the family´s skits that she helmed at the Friday night camper talent shows, always very sophisticated humor. Our thoughts are with Lois, Rebecca, and Sarah, her daughter and granddaughters who we shared cabins with at camp over the years.

Like Andy Morrison, I had the honor of working with Barbara at Market Opinion Research for 7 years and then followed her career with the Census Bureau and the ACSI. 6 years ago we reconnected at Glacier Hills where our ukulele band would play once a month for residents. I always looked forward to seeing Barbara there every month. She was an inspiration to so many women and I feel honored to have known her.

I reported to Barbara during my internship at Market Opinion Research in 1973, and when I began full-time employment at that firm in 1975. She supported my effort to finish my dissertation at the University of Michigan while working full-time from 1975-1980, and we continued as colleagues in that firm for another nine years. She was always supportive, creative, and had a penchant for adventure, taking on new and complicated survey projects for government and commercial clients. When I and...

I had the pleasure of working for Barbara from 1971-1986. It was an honor and privilege to work for her. RIP

This sad news brings back memories of my mother, Joyce Fincher Coye, speaking often and fondly of her Cornell classmate and sorority sister. "Bimbi" to my mom's "Jef" as the nicknames in college went. My mom was so proud to know the gracious Barbara who was diligent about keeping in touch. My family's sincerest condolences go out to Barbara's family. She had a life well lived as you well know and we cherish these fond bits of our past.

She was a very gracious lady and willing to share her knowledge. I was proud to know her. Grace York, former U-M government information librarian.
