Barbara was a wonderful colleague and friend during the years she taught at Carleton College during the l960s. It was a great loss when she left us and a greater loss to hear she is no longer a presence in our world. Frank Morral

My daughter Melissa tells me she has fond memories of Barbara. In fact, I don't know how anyone who ever met Barbara would not have fond memories of her. Mine are legion, since our friendship went back almost 50 years, when we were next-door neighbors in Northfield, Minnesota, where Barbara was teaching at Carleton College. It was a joy for me when her marriage to John brought her to Nashville, and our two husbands became colleagues and friends. In my study in Philadelphia I keep the picture they took one Christmas Eve of my daughter, barely age two. I look at it and I can see Barbara, her hair elegantly upswept and blond, on our sofa. Or I remember the many, many dinner parties at their house, almost always with the wit and congeniality of English department colleagues. Or our tearful parting when I moved to Philadelphia, the even sadder conversations at John's tragic death, and yet the happiness we shared traveling together to Turkey, to Italy, to the Russia of John's heritage. She has been a meaningful part of my life for so long despite the great distance between us that it is beyond anything like sadness that I feel knowing she is no longer here. My very deepest sympathy to Beverly and her family at this unfillable loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and her family. Barbara was always very kind to me as a child. I greatly admired my Uncle John and Aunt Barbara. Although we lived very far apart, they still remembered my birthday every year. As a child, that meant so much to me. I still have a very special series of books they gave to me on extinct animals. The books are about 30 years old. I now read them to my daughter with loving memories of both of them.
Sincerely,

I am deeply saddened by Barbara's passing. I remember her as a gentle, gracious woman, and I believe she and John were happy together. This must be an especially difficult time for you, Beverly, and I sincerely hope you can find solace in your family, friends and with memories of Barbara in happier times.

I have such great memories of Barbara. During the last few years of his life I became closer than ever to my brother,John. Barbara was very much part of that renewed relationship. She will be remembered for all of her academic accomplishments as well as her role as aunt and sister-in-law. Barbara's down to earth approach made her a favourite with my children. I am so sorry for your loss! Love Dan

My condolences go out to the family and friends of Barbara. Her late husband, John Conder, was my Godfather. I have fond memories of my Aunt Barbara growing up as I would visit my Grandparents in New Jersey. She was deeply devoted to my Godfather. After he passed, my Aunt Barbara and I remained in contact through correspondence for some time. Regretfully, we lost touch over the years. I am deeply saddened by her passing and I wish that my children and husband had gotten the chance to meet her. Sincerely, Danielle Nicole King (a/k/a Danielle Conder)
