Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

Barbara Lorene (McCarahan) Coulter. age 95, was welcomed into Heaven on September 12. 2025, by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Barbara was born at home in Mount Vernon on February 28, 1930, to Ernest and Lorene McCarahan. During her growing up years, due to family circumstances, Barbara lived with different family members in the area. While living in Bellingham during middle school, she attended church and committed her life to the Lord.

Her high school years were spent in Sedro-Woolley. After graduation, she had hoped to train as a dental assistant, but illness intervened. It was during this time she met Orin Coulter, who co-owned a Sedro-Woolley service station. They were married in 1947.

In 1958, as the family grew (Ronald, Louise, Edward, Nancy and Richard), Orin moved the family to Concrete. where he was employed by Puget Sound Energy. When the children were in school, Barbara became a postal worker, following in the tradition of her father and other family members.

When Orin retired, he and Barbara moved to Mount Vernon to be closer to family. Emmanuel Baptist Church was recommended by friends, and they soon began attending. She became a member in September of 2006. Barbara was a giver and a server- a behind the-scenes kind of person. She left her handprints on many ministries and projects. She often supplied food for memorials or personal needs that she learned about. She volunteered in Vacation Bible School, could be counted on to cut and prepare handcrafts for Sunday school, and assembled Awana Grand Prix racing kits. For several years, the Coulter family printed and mailed the monthly Emmanuel newsletter, The Expression.

Barbara was also busy serving in the community. She was a long-time blood donor and hospital volunteer.

Left to mourn her passing are her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and a host of Emmanuel friends.

"God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people..." Hebrews 6:10

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, 2:00 pm, in the Fireside Room at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1525 E College Way, Mount Vernon, WA.

Not sure what to say?

The entire Counter family were neighbors and friends while I was growing up. I spent lots of time at their home and knew Barbara was always there for any of us. So hard to hear of the loss of this wonderful lady. Another Angel is watching over us.

You were like a second Mother to me, Ron an d Louise were great friends. See you upstqirs

Very sorry to hear of your sadness at this time; however, Mrs. Barbara has only gone HOME, her final retirement which is eternal. Beautiful obituary. Yes, God will reward her faithfulness and faith. Be faithful, continue her work where you are, in reaching the lost that don't know our Christ.
