Barbara Dettman Fleming was born on June 27, 1940, in the lively and expansive city of Chicago, Illinois. She left us on November 13, 2024, at the age of 84, having crafted a life that was as rich in experiences as it was in achievements. At the time of her passing, she was residing under the Floridian sun in Delray Beach—a place that undoubtedly appreciated her warmth and tenacity.
Nothing defined Barbara more than her love for her family. As a mother, she raised her three children—Jeff, Jamie, and Jennifer—infusing their lives with wisdom, adventure, and, of course, a pinch of spirited guidance. Her towering achievement in the professional world came with the founding of Consultis, her very own IT consulting and staffing company. A true pioneer, Barbara paved her own path in an industry that was just beginning to blossom, touching lives through the opportunities she created.
To those who knew her, Barbara was both strong-willed and tender-hearted. In a world full of gray areas, she was someone who believed in taking a stand. With Mom, it was always "her way or the highway," a sentiment all met with a loving smile, knowing deep down that her way often led to the most extraordinary heights. We would joke that she was mistaken once, but she was wrong about that too.
Barbara's affinity for people extended beyond family and work. Her grandchildren held a cherished place in her heart, and she showered them with the kind of affection only a grandmother could. But her circle of influence wasn’t confined to familial bounds. Her adventures around the world saw her sipping tea in the highlands of Darjeeling and laughing amidst vibrant markets, connecting with people from every walk of life.
As we remember Barbara today, I find myself replaying one of my favorite stories about her. It's that tale of world travels, disruption of norms, and the pure openness that epitomized her existence. Those stories, full of energy and exploration, will be missed but never forgotten.
In December, close friends and family will gather to celebrate her life—not with solemnity, but with laughter, love, and shared memories. I hope that, in her honor, we can all share a Barbara story or two, recalling the mischievous twinkle in her eye and the zest with which she embraced life.
Barbara Dettman Fleming lived robustly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone she met. The world feels a touch emptier without her, but it is infinitely richer because of her contributions—both personal and professional. Rest in peace, dear Barbara. Your tales and triumphs will live on in those that loved you.
