Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home - Cincinnati Obituary

Barbara Hammond (nee Wenstrup), 86 of Cincinnati, Ohio and previously Punta Gorda, Florida passed away on November 9. Babs, as she was commonly known and Bubbles, to her grandchildren, was born in Cincinnati, oldest daughter of Carl and Lucille Wenstrup. Babs attended High School at The School of the Brown County Ursulines and graduated from Our Lady of Cincinnati College (Edgecliff). After graduation she married Tom Kneer and raised four daughters. She worked for several years in real estate and was most rewarded by her work at The Program for Cincinnati. She was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Gilbert Hammond. Together they lived in Punta Gorda, FL for 20 years where they were active members of the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club. Babs was active in her community and enjoyed teaching English as a second language. Babs was the dear mother of Debbie Kneer (Peter) Guastella, Kathryn Kneer (David) Smith, Teri Kneer (Jay) Brokamp and Christine Kneer (David) Aronoff, M.D.  Sister to Daniel (Eileen) Wenstrup and Kay (Fletcher) Zimpfer. Stepmother to Gilbert Palmer (Libbie) Hammond Jr., Bruce (Diane Haslem) Hammond, and Pamela Hammond. She was Bubbles to 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Babs was blessed with a close family and many friends in both Ohio and Florida. She was an avid bridge player and loved to entertain family and friends who frequently visited in Florida. She loved trips on their boat “Prize Catch” with their biggest adventure traveling from Punta Gorda to Cincinnati. She loved to travel, and their most memorable was traveling around the world, although it took two cruise trips to accomplish this. Babs always said she wanted to be buried with her favorite drink, Gin and Tonic. And she wanted her passing to be a celebration of life. Visitation will be held at the Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Linwood and Delta Aves., Mt. Lookout, Friday, November 15, 6 – 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 16, 10:00 AM at St. Michaels the Archangel Church, 11144 Spinner Ave., Sharonville, 45241. Burial following the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to JDRF (www2.jdrf.org), 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004, Women’s Ordination Conference (https://www.womensordination.org/), PO Box 15057, Washington, DC 20003, or Ursuline Academy (https://www.ursulineacademy.org/support/memorial) 5535 Pfeifer Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45242.

Not sure what to say?

Babs and Gil were wonderful friends of my mother and father, Martha and Harry Macrae. She and I often celebrated our October birthdays together!! Babs always lit up a room when she walked in! Her love of family and friends was always exuberant! I have missed seeing her since my mom passed away in 2009... only spoke briefly with her after she moved to Cincinnati - but kept up via an occasional email. She was always proud of and doing on her children and grandchildren!! I know she will be...

We were so sad to receive news of Babs passing. We got to first meet her in Punta Gorda and developed a wonderful relationship after purchase of her St Thomas Dr property. She and family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'll miss the lovely tales of the adventures with Bubbles. I hope the grandchildren are doing okay with her passing. Much love to you all. Niki

Our sincere condolences to the family. We were lucky to have met this beautiful lady known as Bubbles on several occasions at Debbie's house and she was such a pleasure to sit and talk to. She will be missed.

Babs was such a lovely person and I know how much she will be missed. I have very fond memories of the times I got to spend time with her.
