Barbara Kelly Obituary
Barbara Ann (Newbert) Kelly, 83, of Edmond, Oklahoma, died Friday evening, December 29, 2006 at Edmond Specialty Hospital. A long time Edmond resident, Barbara most recently lived at Tealridge Retirement Community. Barbara was born February 22, 1923, in Newton, Massachusetts as the youngest child and only daughter of Emma (Lovely) and Walter Eugene Newbert who preceded her in death, as did her two brothers, Walter, Jr. and Robert. After attending Beaver Country Day School and Bradford Junior College, Barbara met and married John P. Kelly, a naval officer and later CBS Radio executive on May 6, 1944, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a marriage that lasted until John's death in 1997. Barbara was the mother of 8 children, 7 of whom survive her: four sons, John P. (Jack) Kelly (Kathy) of Irving, Texas and Lexington, KY, Lawrence N. Kelly of Moore, OK, Donald W. Kelly (Susan) of Edmond, OK, and William J. Kelly (Kathleen) of Bloomfield, NJ; and three daughters, Emma Kelly of Los Gatos, CA, Patricia A. Kelly of Edmond, OK, and Andrea Jevans (David) of Menlo Park, CA. Her youngest child James P. Kelly died in 1991. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Her grandchild, Michael, of Edmond, preceded Barbara in death in 2004. Barbara, along with her late husband, John, was a dedicated community volunteer in many roles including 22 years as a Pink Lady volunteer in Radiology at Edmond Memorial Hospital, extensive volunteer efforts for the Oklahoma Society for the Blind, delivering for Edmond Meals on Wheels for several years, as well as numerous activities for her church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Edmond, a church and faith which she joined later in life. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at Baggerley Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 11:00 on Thursday, January 4, 2007. Barbara will be cremated and burial will be at Gracelawn Cemetery on Friday, January 5, 2007. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Oklahoma Society for the Blind or the American Cancer Society.
