Barbara Perlmutter Obituary

Barbara Perlmutter, 80, of Indialantic, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, due to her cancer. Barbara Perlmutter, fondly known as "Bubbie", "Brindy" or "my adopted mom", was born January 9, 1932, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

She spent her childhood in Savannah, Georgia with her sisters, Nita Kramer, Chuchy Bernstein, the late Ethel Meddin; her brother, Davis Cohen; her mother, the late Bessy Cohen; and her father, the late Louis Cohen. She then went to the University of Kentucky and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Medical Technology and Bacteriology. At college, she met her husband, Jerry Perlmutter, to whom she was married for 59 years.

They moved to Brevard County in 1957, and became active in the community. She helped to establish Temple Beth Sholom, becoming a Sunday school teacher at the Temple, as well as an officer of its Sisterhood. She was also a member of Chabad, Brandeis, Hadassah, community teaching associations and art counsels.

Barbara and Jerry have three children, Jack, Lisa and Rene. While raising her children, she was a medical technologist, as well as a high school science teacher, at Melbourne Central Catholic and Satellite High School. She also coached and played tennis and traveled the world throughout her career.

After retiring, Barbara got back to her passion of art, and as an artist she worked with many local artists. She also traveled and painted with friends and took classes at the Ringling School of Art and Design in North Carolina, the Arrowmont School of Design in Tennessee, and classes at Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Among many organizations, she was a member of the Artist Guild of Brevard Watercolor Society and the Strawbridge Art League. She has received national recognition at the 64th National Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Paintings and Photography by the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida. She has been featured in various news articles, radio interviews, magazines and local TV. Her art has appeared in many local establishments including restaurants, sport's bars, business establishments, hospitals, the Viera government office, Melbourne Airport, Satellite Beach Library, Melbourne Beach Library, art galleries, studios, the Henegar Center and Brevard Cultural Alliance.

Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Jerry Perlmutter; her son, Jack Perlmutter of Kauai, his wife, Miriam Perlmutter, and grandchildren, Jenifer Sheldon, Josh Greer and Isabella Perlmutter; her daughter, Lisa Troner of Indialantic her husband, Bill Troner, and grandson, David Troner; her daughter, Rene Lewis of Indian Harbor Beach, her husband, Tim Lewis her granddaughter, Breanna Lewis.

The family wants to thank all of her friends including those who attended her 80th Birthday Women's Luncheon, her relatives who traveled so far and were so comforting, her wonderful home health aides and doctors, all of whom have spent countless hours caring for her like loved family.

Funeral Services will be at Temple Beth Sholom, 5995 North Wickham Road, Melbourne, at 1:00 on Sunday, April 15th. Graveside Services following the funeral service will be held at the Florida Memorial Gardens at 5950 S. U.S. Highway 1, Rockledge.

Dear Jerry and daughters, Rene, Lisa and son, Jack and grandchildren, I am so saddened by the passing of dear Barbara.
She was such a wonderful person and such a talented artist. I knew her as a painter and was so fortunate when she came to the Raku class. So happy to have shared in her 80th Birthday celebration. Her life was full of accomplishments which I just learned in this article. Peace and Love to you all
