Barbara Smith Obituary

Barbara "Babs" Hartung Smith
11/06/2024 - 09/30/2024
Barbara Hartung Smith (Babs) passed into the arms of her Lord on the 30th of September 2024, at the age of 92 in Houston, Texas. Babs was born on the 6th of November 1931, in Camden, Arkansas to Loura Holmes Hartung and George Hermann Hartung. At a young age, her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where she lived until she was 13 at which time her family moved again to Houston, Tx. There she attended Lanier Junior High, Lamar High School and later graduated from SMU in Dallas, Tx where she pledged Pi Beta Phi and was President of the Texas Beta chapter her senior year.
It was at SMU that she met the love of her life, Herbert E. "Ed" Smith, Jr. from Dallas. Babs and Ed were married on the 3rd of October 1953 in Houston, after which they honeymooned while awaiting orders that would begin Ed's career in aviation with the USAF and ultimately the Manned Space Program with NASA in Houston. After stops including Lake Charles and Oklahoma City, they moved to Houston in 1963.
In Houston, Babs made a home supporting Ed's career and their family of three children, Elizabeth, Scooter and Charlie. Whether entertaining friends, family, astronauts, scientists, the occasional KGB operative, serving in the Junior League, the Texas Children's Hospital Library, St. Luke's United Methodist Church, or as a supportive mom for scouts, sports events and school musicals, Babs was always busy and engaged. Over the years, Babs also loved being a "mom" to many of her children's friends and has carried and cherished those relationships throughout her life. She and Ed also hosted "infamous" New Year's Eve parties, well into their 80's (the River Oaks Patrol insisted they finally desist) and Babs' poundcakes were a welcome addition to most any doorstep, table or occasion.
Since moving to Houston, Babs and Ed have been steadfast members of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and have loved being a part of the membership for over 60 years where they have made many fast friends through various church activities, service projects, the Randy Smith Bible Study Class and their LIFT team, which have met regularly over the course of many years. When St. Luke's opened its doors on Sunday mornings, it was a good bet Babs was already there.
In 1996, Babs began 27 years of volunteer service with the Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library at Texas Children's Hospital. The hours she spent at TCH in the Family Library and the volunteers, staff and patients that she befriended during that time were a significant bright spot in her life and she often talked about the organization, the people and the blessing that TCH is to our community and the families it serves. Her time at TCH brought Babs great joy and fulfillment.
Babs is survived by her beloved husband, Ed of over 70 years; son George M. "Scooter" Smith and his wife, Clare, daughter Elizabeth Smith Curtis and her husband Carl, son Charles McGaha Smith and his wife, Amanda; grandsons Weston Edward Smith and his wife Abbie, and Christopher Ward Smith and his wife Leighton, great-grandson, Leon Ward Smith and Amanda's sons Ethan Bryfogle and Grayson Bryfogle.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 5th of October, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Tom Pace, Senior Pastor, is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Fellowship Hall.
For those unable to attend the service in person, virtual attendance may be accessed by visiting Bab's online memorial tribute at GeoHLewis.com and selecting the "join Livestream" icon in the service section. While there you may also share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with her family by selecting the "Add a Memory" icon.

Dear Ed:

I just learned of Babs' passing and wanted to reach out at the start of this New Year to send my condolences from the Brickel family.

Babs was an incredible human being in so many ways and her warmth, caring, and support of others is evident by the many affiliations and good deeds listed in her obituary as well as, the lives she touched over the years including those to our family.

I was so touched when you and Babs traveled to Arlington to my Jim's funeral 10 years ago and we spoke of the adventures you shared in NASA
and recounted the family stories including the trip with our children and your Charlie to the Cape for a long weekend when were at MacDill AFB.

Jim so deeply cherished your friendship, and adored Babs and would often describe her as a "powerhouse"---and that she was!

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with in 2025 to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Mary Brickel

Babs lived the definition of a Prayer Warrior!

She was in a lot of pain for her last few years. Unfortunately, for me that is the only time I knew her, the last few years of her earthly life. If God was only concerned with our physical, I am certain Babs would have been healed. God molded Babs into a Spiritual Warrior through some of the stories she told me and the class in the few years Iknew her. My prayers are with Ed and the family.

Babs is cheering us on and advocating for us to go all in for Jesus!

Dear Ed, Cissy, Scooter and Charlie,
Your beloved wife and mother stepped in to be my adopted mother then mine died suddenly. Her heart was so big and her love so strong - a living example of God's love to so many lives. We pray God's grace, mercy and peace with you all now, as we celebrate her arrival in heaven.
With love, Denise & Randy Doyle

Babs was the most prolific of the St. Lukes prayer warriors, as well as an exemplary Christian lady. Our own prayers go out to Ed and the family now, knowing that she is safely home. Lord, thank you for Babs.

We, in the Randy Smith SS Class, were blessed for so many years with Bab´s extensive knowledge of the Bible shared with our class. What a blessing for us. Prayers for Ed and the family at this time.

Dear special friend,
I have so many happy memories of our times together with the RSBSC at Laity Lodge! I remember you and Babs well. You both lit up the room!! I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.
I want to share a story with you.
My precious wife of 55 years, Gail, was a pioneer of physical exercise in our Kerrville area. She passed away on New Year's Eve 2010. Whenever she traveled to a workshop or convention, as soon as she got there, she would call me and say, I'm here, I'm safe, I'm in the room."
Ed, Babs just called.
Your Laity Lodge brother in Christ, Eddie Sears

Remembering Babs as a dear, sweet lady. I can still see her working with the infant baptism families in the church office on Sunday morning. I'll alwys think of her in her pink suit wearing pink shoes. That memory makes me smile.
