Not sure what to say?

I remember the time Barbara and I went on that spontaneous road trip to the coast. It was one of those perfect, unplanned adventures that became an instant memory we´d talk about for years. I can still hear her laugh when we got hopelessly lost driving through the winding roads, with nothing but the sound of the wind and her voice, which always had this way of calming me, even when we were in the middle of a detour that seemed to take us further away from the ocean.

So sorry to hear at this late date about Professor Barbara Welter. I was the Program Assistant at the Graduate Center for many years in History. She was always a pleasure when she would come into my office and we would have such interesting conversations. My sincerest condolences to her family.

I got to know Barbara as a colleague at Hunter College and the Graduate Center. She was a bold defender of academic freedom in an environment where many experienced violations of faculty and student rights. She had an acerbic wit that was often applied to deserving targets. I enjoyed our conversations and her involvement on a Hunter College Senate committee investigating academic freedom issues. She was forthright and bold. I will miss her.
