I did not know Barney but I knew his mother, she was at Hampton with me (I am told that Jessie was his mother) so sorry to hear of her loss.

"Bad Boy Barney"..... that is how Mr. Lowe at Carver in Montgomery, Ala describe him and like many students at Carver he touch my life as well. Teachers like him do not exist any more and I remember him very well since he had a profound impact on my life. Sleep well BAD BOY.

To the Smart Family, you have our deepest sympathy. Barney Smart has meant a great deal to our family. When he recruited our son from Benjamin E. Mays High in Atlanta to be a member of the Marching Force, we were very proud and excited. What meant even more to us was the personal interest that he had in our sons’ education. I would like to send my deepest prayers and condolence. Mr. Smart played a role in helping me develop my character and also my success at Hampton University. Not only was he a great Band director but also a friend. Friend that greeted you with open arms and made you felt if though you were at home. I offer my sincere condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Barney Smart. It is never easy to lose a loved one, but peace may be assured as we know that he now rests in the bosom of God.
The first year that Mr Smart came to "the Force" was a tough one for everyone involved, as he transitioned to lead us behind the likes of Sylvester Young. Not daunted by the task at hand, Mr smart stepped in, filled in, and was strengthened within, as he lead the Hampton University...

My heart and deepest sympathies go out to the Smart Family. I met Mr.Smart the Summer of 1994. I came from L.A. on a bus that was a two and a half day long trip. Mr.Smart was right there to pick me and my two other friends up. I was scared , broke and ready to go home the day I arrived, he had a smile on his face and calmed me down. He didn't have to do it but he did everything in his power to get me in and keep me in school for five years, when I messed up and when I didn't have the money....
