Smith & Gaston Funeral Services, Inc. - Birmingham Obituary

January 28, 1988 – October 5, 2024

On January 28, 1988, in Los Angeles, California, Norman and Beverly Carol Johnson were bestowed the gift of becoming the parents of Barrett Chase Johnson. Shortly after the death of his paternal grandfather, Alfred Johnson, the family made the decision to move from Los Angeles, California, to Birmingham, Alabama. During his adolescence, with his whole heart Barrett readily poured into his relationship with God. Bethel Baptist Church Collegeville became his home church. It was here that he worked to help cultivate his unique perspective. From his family and his faith, a sturdy foundation was formed which helped to prepare him for life.

Anyone who knew Barrett readily recognized his love for motorcycles, so it was only natural for him to pursue his passion. He matriculated through the Birmingham City schools, and in 2006, he graduated from A. H. Parker High School. Shortly after graduating from high school, his parents ardently supported his choice of attending the American Motorcycle Insitute, located in Daytona Beach, Florida, on the WyoTech campus. There, Barret studied an array of disciplines—specialized training in the art and science of the motorcycle and marine industries.

He earned a wealth of experience that would help to set up his future endeavors. Outstanding skills were developed as he could build, fix, or repair just about anything. He would often spend his leisure time at events hosted by NASCAR and the Grand American Road Racing Association.

Upon completing the American Motorcycle Institute, Barrett received his father’s blessing and followed in his big brother’s footsteps and enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. Organically, he became “an ambassador for all our Nation holds dear.” In March of 2009, in Montgomery, Alabama, Barrett entered the service. Initially ranked as corporal, his consistent actions sanctioned him with receipt of a letter informing him of meeting the requirements for the rank of Sergeant. During his military career, his outstanding leadership and dedicated performance was amplified by any task he completed. His career began on the USS Green Bay, a San Antonio class amphibious transport dock which is assigned to the US Pacific Fleet, located at the Naval Base in San Diego.

Barrett was emboldened and determined to achieve. Initially, he was stationed at New Orlean’s Marine Corp Support Facility. Ultimately, his last duty assignment was at the 3D Assault Amphibian Battalion, a unit of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California. It was here where he specialized as an Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crewman. As Lead Crew Member, Barrett was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the vehicle and the weapons station. He and his crew led mechanized assault operations and operated the vehicle during ship to shore amphibious landings where he handled, loaded, and fired large caliber guns as well as operated the communication equipment.

Precious Memories Barrett received numerous letters and certificates of appreciation. He earned: a Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, a Marine Corp Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (during his time on the USS Boxer), the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Certificate of Commendation, an Expert Rifle Qualification Badge, and a Sharp Shooter Pistol Qualification Badge.
Prior to his honorable discharge, in service to his fellow marines Barrett participated in the Operation War Fighter Exchange (WES) Team and also made a significant contribution to the Marines Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB). While distinguishing his future, Barrett worked diligently and fortified his legacy. He was genuinely ready to conquer it all. Exponentially and effortlessly, he grew into the man whom his
family and friends loved and respected.

Nevertheless, Barrett was unable to control all of life’s unpredictable variables. He inexplicably lost his adored mother to cancer. The transformation of this revered relationship threatened to cloud his perspective. Plagued by a gripping angst, somehow Barrett persevered and pushed through. With God’s grace, he was able to retain his determination and outstanding drive. Lead by a gentle soul and grounded with a gracious spirit, Barrett travelled all over the United States. He was a certified world-traveler. Whether stateside or abroad, one thing remained constant, he was always willing to help anyone. With his transition into the afterlife, a host of cherished family members ushered Barrett beyond those pearly gates. Completely enveloped by love, he joins his paternal grandparents, Alfred Johnson and Fannies Mae Sanders; and maternal grandparents, Richard William Parsons, Sr., and Cleo Davis Phelps, all of whom are undoubtedly proud of the man he became.

In the presence of the One who grants life, Barrett is reunited with his cherished mother, Beverly Carol Parson-Johnson, and the hungry gnaw which antagonized his entire existence is forever calmed. He is finally at perfect peace.

Nevertheless, through countless family and friends his enduring legacy continues. Ultimately, his father, Norman Randall Johnson, is the person who taught Barrett how to be a man. Still, the mutual admiration and the engrained respect even defies death. He also leaves his older brother, Brandon R. Smith I. Their bond is unyielding. While it has been changed by time, it will never be broken. Endless treasured experiences undoubtedly keep his memory alive for his nephews, Brandon R. Smith II and Christian Smith, and nieces, Brianna Smith and Brooke Smith.

While the “WHY?!” continues to plague us all, Barrett Chase Johnson is at perfect peace. And although he has transitioned, he still challenges all of us to carry on, to lead by example, and to ALWAYS remain faith-filled.
