WEST COLUMBIA—Services for Barry Nelson Roof, Sr., 58, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2008 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Officiating will be Rev. Dallas Goff, Rev. Julian Boles, and Rev. Willie Jackson; burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens with Military Rites. The family will receive friends from 5 -7 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be the Marine Combat Veterans. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Wayne Brewer, Willie Jackson, Ray Helms, South Carolina Combat Veterans, Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 402. Memorials may be made to South Carolina Combat Veterans or Purple Heart (John Grace). The family would like to especially thank Dr. William Stuck, Dr. Colin Doyle, and Dr. Linda Janess and Ms. Patricia Bradford for their care of Mr. Roof.
Mr. Roof loving husband of Jeanie Elaine Sturkey, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Quitman and Ruby Mae Gamble Roof. He has been a lifetime area resident and a member of State Full Gospel Church. Mr. Roof retired from Galaxy Boat Manufacturing. He enjoyed drag racing, many friends, member of American Legion, Purple Heart recipient, and a historian for Ch. 402 of Purple Heart until he was no longer physically able. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved helping his fellow veterans, he was a very loving father and grandfather and beloved uncle and brother.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Jeanie Roof of West Columbia; daughters, Gena Staub and Johnny Richardson of Santee, Victoria Staub of West Columbia; sons, Barry Roof, Jr. and his wife, Teresa of Lexington, Matthew Staub of West Columbia; grandchildren, Aubrey Nicole Roberson of Gilbert, Andrew Nelson Roof and Clay Roof both of Lexington; sister Bobbie Sue Johnson and her husband, Leroy of Arkansas; brother, Ira Quitman “Ikey” Roof and his wife, Annette of West Columbia.

I will miss seeing Uncle Barry sitting on the sidedeck, when I drive to MawMaw's house. He was a very special and brave man with a lot of passion for the life he lived. I love you all and you are in my thoughts and prayers. If you need anything please call.
