Beatrice Godley Alligood, age 95, a resident of Washington, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 11:00 in the historic sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ken Hall, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers; Patrick Wilhelm, Brent Dare, Bill Mac Alligood, Bill Gravely, Harley Gravely, Steve Gravely, Ray Lilley, Ray Arnold, Jerry Whitley.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor and at other times at the home.
Mrs. Alligood was born in Pitt County on January 3, 1922, daughter of the late Mayhugh Godley and Bonnie Whitley Godley. Following her graduation from Grimesland High School she attended East Carolina University (ECTC at that time.)
On November 16, 1941 she married Harley Kugler Alligood, Jr and they made their home in Washington. They were blessed with almost 75 years of marriage. Mrs. Alligood was active in many civic organizations including Girl Scouts, Washington Garden Club, and served as President of the Washington Lioness Club.
Her devotion to the First United Methodist Church was evident in her service as Sunday School teacher, and many positions of responsibility with the United Methodist Women and the ecumenical Church Women United.
Mrs. Alligood’s husband, Harley, passed away on September 11, 2016 at the age of 100.
She is survived by her daughters; Lorre Alligood Bowen of Washington and Lynn Alligood Dare and husband Don Dare of Knoxville, Tennessee. Other survivors include her grandchildren; Christine Bowen Wilhelm of LaGrange, NC and Brent Dare of Knoxville, Tennessee, and one great grandson, Patrick Wilhelm of LaGrange, NC.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Alligood was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Godley Ellis of High Point, NC, and her son-in-law, Ted Bowen.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Barnabas Fund of First United Methodist Church, 302 West Second Street or to Eagles Wings Food Pantry at PO Box 426, Washington.
