I had the pleasure of growing up next door to the Branscombs, and it was like having a bonus set of grandparents. Both were always so generous with their time and so warm and loving to my brother and me. It was not until years later that I realized how uncommon and special that relationship with neighbors was. "Dr. Barbar" will be greatly missed.

Little did I know that the father of my Highlands Day School classmate, Janie (with whom I exchanged letters one summer in the late 1960s) would become one of my very favorite people I would later get to know through Duffy's Bend. My heart goes out to the entire Branscomb family. I know Ben is missed, but I also know we are all better off for having known him. A life to be celebrated, for sure. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and pryers.

I never knew from day to day what kinds of "adventures" - a preferred task descriptor of his - awaited me, but I always knew they would be interesting and "fun" - another of his favorite words. I helped him build the trailer for his buggy,...

Ben was a gentle, uncommon man and an exceptional mind - "Thou know'st 'tis common; all that lives must die, passing through nature to eternity" I think Ben would like that line. He had a mind always ready for the next problem and two steps ahead of everyone else towards a solution. A step ahead he is still but "all things be ready if our minds be so ... and by the mass our hearts are in the trim! Ben's mind was ever ready and although "many of our bodies shall no doubt find native graves"...
