BENJAMIN LEE "BEN" MAHMOUD

Mt. Mahmoud was my art teacher at West Virginia State College and an excellent artist that I admired. He invited me to his home, too. When I heard of his death I called his son to say how much I admired him and how sorry I was for his loss. He was the best.

I am sorry to hear about Ben, he was a very good teacher. I am one of the few African American students who stay in touch with him( I am the one who sent the calendar). He did have an impact on my life. I will keep you all in your all prayers

It broke my heart to hear about Ben's passing. He told me about your love story 5 years ago, during my son's party. I even sat next to you during a Harp concert in Music hall, at NIU. I am just glad you two found each other and at least spent some time together. I could tell how much he loved you. Keep that love alive in your heart and cherish the time you spent together. Most people live as a couple for decades, and do not experience what you two had. May he rest in peace...

Ben touched so many people in his all too short lifetime. He was a superbly talented artist and philosopher. His paintings often told complex stories. He shared his works with many of us. People of all ages will miss sharing his quick wit and complex thoughts. We are deeply saddened at his passing.

I was sorry to learn of Ben's passing - and especially sadden to learn that he had ALS. He was such a vibrant person and loved his art. I had him as an instructor for Visual Arts in 1967/68 - he was a great teacher and made learning about art fun. I knew him for many more years as I was the Benefits Adm. in HR at NIU for many years. He definitely left a lasting impression with me and will be missed by many.
