Pfc. Benjamin R. Carman was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman who loved to compete. "He grew up loving the outdoors __ hunting, fishing, camping. All of his friends just loved the outdoors," said his father, Nelson Carman. "He loved his country, but most of all he loved God." Carman, 20, of Jefferson, Iowa, was killed by hostile fire April 6 in Anbar province. Based at Camp Pendleton, Calif., he was a heavy weapons specialist. Carman joined the Marines during his senior year of high school. The Rev. Rod Block, pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Jefferson, said Carman attended services with his family in February before he left for Iraq. "He was nervous, knowing where he was going, but he was not hesitant to go," Block said. "He believed in what he was going to be doing and his family still does." Survivors also include his mother, Marie.
