Bernice Barris

Aunt Bernice was an encouragement and truth speaker in my life! She was a warrior in every sense of the word and I´m incredibly proud to have known her.

Bernice was a great inspiration to me and to so many other female pilots of the Lake Erie 99s. Her face lit up as she shared stories of her amazing flying adventures. She was an incredibly accomplished pilot and air racer. Even at 104, Bernice regularly attended monthly meetings of the 99s, as she was dedicated to the organization she helped Charter in 1974. The Bernice Barris scholarship has helped many female pilots realize their dream of becoming licensed private pilots, and her legacy...

Bernice was amazing! She was an example of how people should always treat others--honestly, direct and with a smile! She will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her.

Bernice was a very memorable lady who broke through the barriers of females in aviation. She flew her plane for many years and worked on, flew and won in the Cleveland Powder Puff Derby. Bernice was a great pilot and a devoted and admired long standing member of the Lake Erie Ninety Nines. She will certainly be missed.

My deepest sympathies to you and your family. Bernice was one in a million.
