Bernice Bick Obituary

Bernice Bick
May 17,1929 - May 26, 2018
Bernice Loraine Bick passed away at the age of 89. She was born in Long Beach, CA and moved to Modesto with her parents, Leoford and Lillian Osborne, when she was 10. She graduated from Modesto High School in 1947. She played the cello for MHS and for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra. Bernice married Gale Best Bick in 1948. They raised three daughters and a son, Susan (Joe Brasil), Debra (Dennis Whorton), Ronald (Csilla), and Judith (Ronald Janda).
While the family lived on a dairy farm, Bernice was involved with her children in 4H, P.T.A., and coached Little League. She later returned to work managing an insurance office until retirement.
Bernice was heavily involved in her community! She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, during which time she sang with the choir and taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School classes in Riverbank. She held offices in almost every capacity in the Riverbank United Methodist Women organization, as well as in the church, serving as Financial Secretary, Lay Member to Annual Conference and chairman of the Administrative Board.
Bernice cofounded the Riverbank Christian Food Sharing, which opened in May 1985. She served as Vice President and Secretary for the first 7 years and as President and Executive Director until she retired. She was on the first governing Board of the Healthy Start Group and helped found the Stanislaus County Food Coalition, a network for food pantries and food banks. Bernice has been honored for: Riverbank Citizen of the Year, Outstanding Volunteer for the City of Modesto, Healthy Start Contributor, Golden Rule Award, UMW for Volunteerism, Board Member of RCFS from the Riverbank Chamber of Commerce, California Assembly, Volunteers of Stanislaus, Board of Supervisors and House of Representatives. Bernice was honored among Outstanding Women of Stanislaus County and Outstanding Women of History. For over 50 years, Bernice was an active member of the Sylvan Improvement Club, holding various officer positions, including Manager for over 20 years.
Bernice enjoyed her life spent with family, the Royal Neighbors, Red Hatters, the Modesto Campers Club, annual trips with her husband to Yuma, AZ, butterflies, cooking, giggling, and Bingo at Bethel Retirement Community, where she resided for the past 4 years.
In addition to her children, Bernice leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Gale, her son Ronny, and her son-in-law Freddy Ferrante.
The family wishes to thank the Bethel Retirement Community, the nurses and doctors at Doctors Medical Center, and the medical staff at Alexander Cohen Hospice House for their loving care.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Lakewood Funeral Home, visitation at 10:00 am, service at 11:00 am. Memorial donations may be sent to: Riverbank United Methodist Church, P.O.Box 1091, Riverbank, CA 95367, and/or Riverbank Christian Food Sharing, P.O.Box 1373, Riverbank, CA 95367.
