Not sure what to say?

I have occasionally thought of Dr Black over the years even though I hardly knew her. But when I read about smart, driven, farsighted Black women fighting for freedom, her image along with Jennifer´s has been in the backdrop of my mind. I hope her memory lives long with others.

I was a former student of Dr. Black's. Oh the pages and pages of copies she must have made for us. There. Was. So. Much. Reading. This is a beautiful tribute to her. I did not know then the extraordinary depth of her person, but I admired her. She did have the most soothing voice, as her sister noted here. She did a lot to shape me as an educator and as a mother. So glad I got a chance to be touched by her life.

Dear Jennifer,

I was so very sorry to read the news of Bernice's death. What a beautiful tribute this is to her, who was such a warm and incredible person. I have wonderful memories of your mother and father at years and years worth of Thanksgivings at our house (I remember your being at some of them, too) and all their involvement over the years in my mom's peace group. My condolences to you and your entire family on this great loss.

Dear Jenny, I’m so sorry to learn about your mother. Thank you for telling her remarkable story.

In memory of the absolute best big sister! I will forever carry with me the of the times you spend with me, all your love, and patience. I will never forget the sound of your voice when you would call mem, "your little sister". It sounded like a symphony to me, so joyful, and very melodic. You were 16 years older than me so loosing you is almost like loosing Mom all over again. Rest well Bernice (Bunchie), my wonderful and beautiful Sister. You are and will always be sorely missed. Always...

Dear Friend, you will always be present in my memories. You and John made my life better. Love to the family. - Sal

What a splendid obituary of an obviously splendid woman! I did not know her, but as a woman of her generation and a PSU graduate and former PSU faculty member, I read the CDT obituaries regularly. This is a standout for a standout woman. Very uplifting! I will remember her story and wish I had known her.

In respect to Covid-19, Zoom services will be held for Bernice on March 7th, please email: [email protected] for information and link. ******Also, please note one correction, her brother’s name is Kenneth McCormick, not Bates. *****
