Old Lyme - Bernice Silverman, 83, of 6 Littlefield Lane, Old Lyme, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 25, 2013, at Gladeview in Old Saybrook.
She was born in New York, N.Y., on Feb. 4, 1930, the daughter of Joseph and Mollie (Berkowitz) Lear.
Bernice was married to Melvin Silverman on June 20, 1948.
Bernice worked with her husband in office design and furnishings for over 30 years at the family owned business, Apex Office Supplies in New London.
Bernice graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute, class of 1948. She was active with the school newspaper, the drama club, and the school yearbook.
She was a member of Congregation Beth El where she was a life member of Hadassah. Bernice was also a past president of the Sisterhood at Temple Bnai Israel in Willimantic. She had taught remedial reading at Willimantic Elementary School, served on the board of the Windham Hospital, and had produced the musicals Fantistics and the Willimantics.
Bernice was an avid gardener, she enjoyed painting and baking, and was a lover of antiques.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Mark L. Silverman, M.D., Professor Judd Silverman, and Karen Glick, Ph.D.; seven grandchildren, Jill, David, and Billy Silverman, Mollie, Miriam, Amy, and Matthew Glick; and her great-grandson, Gabriel James Hughes.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Congregation Beth El, 660 Ocean Ave., New London. Interment will be in Beth El Cemetery, Groton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.
